Friday Wrap-Up

Friday already and I’m happy to say that my to do list is pretty much to-done except for the need to go to the grocery store which I’m going to try to avoid given the 33 degree weather and rain outside. There isn’t anything I desperately need to have. I will need cat food and litter before Monday, but there are many hours between now and Monday.

  • Subbed – 8. Wow, I think that is my biggest week of sending work out, if not ever, than in a while. 5 flash fiction pieces and 3 sets of poems.
  • Accepted – Nada for this week.
  • Rejected – 4 sets of poems but one with a handwritten comment that someone there at least liked two of the poems.

Had kind of an off week on the weight front because I started slipping back into diet behaviors of mentally counting calories and weighing myself everyday. I was down like .2 or .4 for the messed up week. Just want to get back to eating when hungry and moving more. Hate when the diet culture starts sneaking back in on me! But, I digress.

Successfully put a version of 2nd manuscript together and then read it through once with reorganizing a few poems and removing a few. 77 poems right now and i’m getting ready to go back through it again. I have a better idea of how I want the final product to be after reading these poems so many times in the last few weeks. Some of my favorite poems may be pulled but the finished project will be stronger for it, I think.

Not much on the writing front. Doing little exercises to keep me writing but seems I still have a bit of the fiction bug. Once I had this 2nd manuscript really “done” (as if it is ever done), I think I’ll be ready to move on to other projects. I hope, in the new few weeks, to email it to a few readers for feedback.

Also lined up a talk with a book club 5 hours away in my old home town where a lot of poems in Paper House are roughly set. Hoping to also line up a reading at the local small indie bookstore for the same day or day before or after. Hard to decide, sometimes, how far I will travel. Guess it depends on who invites me :)

Hope everyone has had a good writing week. Did you send work out this week? Anything accepted? I list my most current publications under the Publications tab. Speaking of which, do you guys think I should combine the Books and Publications tab? Hoping to blog this weekend about picking work for submissions and such so post any questions you might have about that process.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Your productivity is amazing. But there’s no substitute for persistence and dedication. Focused intensity is a phase I hear a lot.

I haven’t sent out poems in three month. Gotta get on that soon.

Yea you! Have a great weekend.

    • Focused intensity. I like that :) I try not to be prideful but I have always enjoyed being a hard worker. I am leery of the words talent and luck :)

I imagine all the work you were doing with “Underlife” has kept you busy these last few months, oh and all those kids and other things in life (or underlife).

This reply was going to sound intelligent… but it is Friday! Thanks for stopping by.

  2. I am submitting to Alimentum, hopefully at least three new ones, thanks to you grasshopper!

I know I spread myself thin, but I have to fill in my boredom with piddly stuff, but I submitted a photo and brief writeup on why I would make a good subject for an episode of Grill It! with Bobby Flay. They called back, now I have to submit a video. Doing that this weekend. Once they see I am Ms Personality with skills, lol, I am not banking my life on it, just a fun thing…maybe a poem from the experience…I hear you laughing…hoping I can throw the food poetry bit in as well, as a shoe in…who knows, my path in life has not been what I call ‘the great american dream’ theme…

Jessie, have a great weekend…look forward to your next post!

    • you’ll have to let me know how it goes with alimentum. i haven’t sent to them because i don’t have a lot of food poems but it is BEAUTIFUL little lit mag :)

oh if you get to meet bobby flay there would definitely be a poem in that! Have fun making the video!!!! i’ll say i knew you when :)

      • I already meet him at a book store here in jersey, and got an email from a fellow PC, she said she did that FN gig twice and they are not so interested in branded players, so I will not be looking for fame at the stove…my soul belongs to the pen and ink…

I have questions about things, like flash poetry…I called something a vignette, but maybe it was a flash short? hmmm… so much to learn, so little time…

    • The flash fiction sort of came as a surprise and as a flash. I am writing on a difficult topic that I didn’t think I’d ever discuss and that I’ve never been able to discuss in a poetry book. So we shall see how it goes!

  3. Looking forward to your submissions thoughts. I don’t really submit things for publication anymore… But maybe it’s time… I haven’t (print) published anything in about 8 years. Wow.. typing the 8 years thing puts it in perspective.

Anyway, looking forward to the post.

  4. You had a busy week Jessie.
It’s very cold there, actually colder than here.
I just got back from Denver where my son played college baseball, yes they play in the winter …Lol!
But it was a gorgeous day :)

Came to check your post before I go to bed.
    More baseball tmrw :)
Always enjoy your Friday Wrap-ups :)

    Have a great weekend.

    Margie

    • Still overcast here but looks like it is clearing – finally! No snow and little to no rain today so think I’ll try to brave the grocery store :)

Have a great weekend. Baseball in the cold and all!

  5. Obv. with the whole hospital thing I didn’t write much or send much out, but I did write 3 poems and send out 3 submissions. Sent 4 to Memoir(and), 3 to Camroc Press Review and 2 to Deuce Coupe. So far I’ve only heard from one, and CPR is taking one for publication next week, so yay!

Hopefully next week I’ll spend some time working on Red Dirt Review submissions and writing in a more focused manner once life gets back to (mostly) normal.

    • glad to hear the SO is doing better though :)
The last time my husband was in the hospital for an extended stay (LONG time ago) I don’t remember being able to write anything but man I devoured books like that was the only way I could escape!

Congrats on Camroc. I just love them! I’m hoping to get a submission for Red Dirt next week :)
